A workout most days helps keep the doctor away

Research has found that regular exercise helps to bolster your immune system which means you can fight off simple bacterial and viral infections more easily.

We don’t know exactly the mechanism of how this works but some of the theories include: physical activity flushes out the lungs more frequently which removes airborne bacteria that causes cold and flu; antibodies and white blood cells (which eat up bacteria) circulate around the body in the blood vessels more quickly; temporary body temperature rises during bouts of exercise may inhibit bacterial growth; and exercise slows down the release of stress hormones which can be responsible for increasing your chance of illness.

Too much of a good thing however can decrease your immunity. Overdoing your exercise and not getting enough rest and recovery can have the negative effect by increasing the amount of stress-related hormones in your body. It can also decrease the amount of white blood cells in circulation.

So get the exercise balance right, get a regular dose of fruit and vegetables, keep your stress levels in check, and you stand a better chance of decreasing your visits to the doctor!
